Read a 15-day ski snow map without mistaking it for a resort report.

A map can be a useful reason to look closer at a mountain. The useful part comes from keeping its two windows separate, treating flakes as a source signal, and ending with the people who actually run the place.

The short version

A map signal is a cue to recheck, not a reason to declare a powder day.

The live map uses a current ECMWF Open Data IFS model source near listed mountain locations. It classifies model windows rather than translating a grid cell into resort snowfall, settled base, terrain access, or a day-of-skiing verdict.

The discipline is simple: use the map to notice a place, use a closer forecast where available, and use the operator for the decision that matters. That order creates useful snow stoke without asking a weather signal to answer questions it cannot answer.

The 7-day + 8-day workflow

Read the two horizons separately before you react.

The 15-day display uses one seven-day window followed by one eight-day window. They are not separate resort forecasts, and adding them together would create a confidence the source does not provide.

  1. Use days 1–7 to choose where to inspect.

    The first window is a short-range model signal. A positive marker can earn a closer look, but it is not an observed snow report, a resort total, or a promise that the day will ski well.

  2. Treat days 8–15 as a separate, less certain window.

    The second window is intentionally shown apart from days 1–7. Keeping the windows separate helps prevent a farther-out model idea from being read as one combined resort forecast.

    The on-demand NWS page shows published six-hour new-snow windows for one selected representative point. Read its source time and point details before using it as a closer planning check.

  4. Finish at the operator before travel or a ski-day decision.

    The resort is the source for lifts, terrain, roads, parking, reservations, closures, and its own conditions report. A model map cannot settle any of those questions.

What the symbols mean

Let the map stay categorical.

A falling flake

A flake means the relevant model source window carries a positive snow signal at the mapped location. It is not a depth, a snow stake reading, or a claim that every part of a resort is snowing.

A major marker

A major marker is a more prominent display category in that exact source window. It is not a “mega forecast,” a resort-level total, a condition report, or a prediction of the whole season.

No flake

No positive source signal is not proof of dry weather, poor skiing, or a closed mountain. It only says the displayed map has no positive signal to show for that place in that window.

What stays outside the map

A short-range model signal cannot make a seasonal or operational call.

  • It does not report observed snow, snowfall totals, base depth, grooming, lifts, terrain, roads, or parking.
  • It does not predict which resort will be best, where a skier should travel, or whether a ski day will be safe.
  • It does not make a month-ahead or season-ahead snowfall claim. A 15-day source window is not a seasonal outlook.
  • It does not replace a pass seller's access rules, a resort's reservation system, or the operator's final information.

Use weather context to plan a check—not to let a map buy a pass for you.

When the mountains and ski days you actually want are clear, use pass math that keeps dated prices, documented caps, and official rechecks visible. A map signal does not add a mountain to your itinerary or change a pass's terms.

Is this a 15-day ski forecast?

It is a guide to reading a 15-day ECMWF model-signal map. The map can show a current source window when that source validates, but this guide does not turn that window into a ski-day, resort-conditions, or seasonal forecast.

What does a falling flake mean?

A falling flake marks a positive model snow signal in the displayed source window. It does not state a snowfall depth, settled base, terrain opening, lift status, road condition, or likelihood of a good ski day.

What does a major marker mean?

A major marker is a more prominent display category within that exact model source window. It is not a “mega forecast,” a resort-level snowfall prediction, or a claim about a season.

Why might the live map show no flakes or no map?

No flake means the displayed source window has no positive signal for that marker; it does not prove dry weather or poor skiing. If the source snapshot cannot be validated, the live map withholds all markers rather than retaining an old result.

Can I use a map signal to choose or buy a ski pass?

No. The map is a short-range planning cue, not a pass recommendation. Build a pass plan from the mountains and days you actually intend to ski, then recheck the relevant operator before buying.
