1. The season ahead
NOAA seasonal probability bands
Precipitation: Equal chances
Temperature: Equal chances
Issued Aug 20, 2026 · Use before Sep 17, 2026 (UTC)Regional temperature and precipitation signals, not snowfall totals or your ski-week forecast. NOAA percentages are lower edges of probability bands; equal chances favors no category. CanSIPS uses a coarse 1° grid, and rounded percentages may not sum to 100. NOAA bands and CanSIPS category probabilities use different displays; do not rank mountains by comparing those percentages.
What is normal at Alta? Monthly climate baseline
NOAA’s 1991–2020 station normals put seasonal outlooks in context. These are historical averages, not this winter’s forecast or the exact regional thresholds used by NOAA’s outlook. Seasonal precipitation odds cannot be converted into inches of snow.

Years show contributing records, not a promise of 30 complete years. Standard: at least 24 years; missing months may be filled. Representative: at least 10 years with gaps filled using nearby stations. Provisional: at least 10 years with gaps unfilled. Estimated: statistically estimated from shorter records. Nonzero values rounded to zero retain that source flag.

Community experienceBudget for the bus, but check the boarding planRead tip & sources
A January 2026 r/UTsnow discussion describes full buses passing waiting riders. Use this as a prompt to check departure stops, current service and a return plan; it does not establish today's capacity or a guaranteed best arrival time. Visit Salt Lake says to check back in October for 2026/27 ski-bus details, as reviewed September 14. Before booking a car-free stay, match the new timetable to your ski dates, the stop near your lodging and the last return. Include any transfer and backup-ride costs in your trip budget; an old route frequency is not a confirmed service plan for this winter.

Official sourceCompare the Ikon add-on before buying a second full passRead tip & sources
Alta lists Ikon add-ons at $859 for full Ikon or $359 for Base, purchased with a qualifying Alta-Bird pass by December 10, 2026. Add-on access differs from standalone Ikon products. Read the excluded destinations before budgeting; the calculator does not price these add-ons.

Official sourceUse Alta-Bird transit benefits before paying twiceRead tip & sources
Alta lists free UTA Ski Bus travel with the Alta-Bird pass and requires tapping the pass. Its fine print limits connecting TRAX and other UTA services to journeys used with a ski-bus route; separate transit use can forfeit the benefit. Check your exact pass eligibility and connection before counting a fare as included. Compare lodging plus airport transfers, any uncovered fares and a backup ride against a rental car plus parking. Enter quotes for your whole group; one eligible pass does not establish free travel for everyone. Confirm the new winter timetable before choosing lodging around a bus stop.
